Seeds in HIS Garden...

WHAT IS SEEDS IN HIS GARDEN?
Seeds In HIS Garden (SIHG) is a Children's Home and School (Cypress Academy) in Nairobi, Kenya. It is directed by Rebecca "Becky" Adams, and is registered as a Kenyan Children's Home with the Ministry of Lands and Settlements. The members of the Board of Trustees are:

  • Rebecca Lu Adams, Trustee and the American Director
  • Wambugu Kariuki, Trustee, a Kenyan Businessman
  • Reverend Wayne M. Adams, Trustee, an American Pastor
  • Dr. Safwat Saleh Andrawes, Trustee, aKenyan Physician
  • Bonnie Ness, Trustee, An American Missionary in Kenya
  • Elizabeth Obuogo, Trustee, a Kenyan Sociologist
  • Winifred Gitao, Trustee, a Kenyan Attorney

The purpose of SIHG is to care for orphaned and abandoned children in Kenya. Most of the children are AIDS orphans, but the children do not have AIDS. There are 27 in the home at this time. They range in age from a few months to 17 years. They are provided total care, which includes the loving atmosphere of a Christian home, good food, clothing, health care, and outstanding educational opportunities.

The goal of the home is to provide LEADERS, not followers!

HOW DID IT BEGIN?
A missionary, who has served in Kenya for more than 25 years, invited Becky Adams to visit Nairobi and observe the terrible conditions of the abandoned children there. So, in November of 1997, Becky took her vacation and went to Nairobi for three weeks. During that time, Becky lived in a tent in a slum area. When she returned home, she said, "I must go back and help!" She quit her job, sold her car and horse, and began making plans to return. She determined that she would need $1,500.00 per month to do all she wanted to do. Her immediate family decided that, if she was willing to dedicate her life to caring for abandoned children in Africa, the least they could do was support her efforts.

HOW IS IT FUNDED?
Seeds In HIS Garden began as a family project with a modest budget of $1,500.00 per month. Today the operational budget is about $7,000.00 per month, and it is supported by not only family members, but donors from Becky's home church, a few other churches, and friends. Several contacts have been made in Holland as well. Becky's father, Rev. Wayne Adams, has been the principal fun raiser in the USA. A donor base has been established and funds are accepted and records kept at Hands of Hope International in Monterey, CA. All donations are made directly to Seeds In HIS Garden and are tax deductible. We have and are still operating with no administrative costs. As a result, we are able to send 100% of all donations to Africa. Periodic fund raisers have enabled us to provide two vehicles, purchase the land, fence the land, put in the well and pump, and construct the first building, which is a small chapel.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED?
Since beginning the mission in March of 1998, a great deal has been accomplished. During the first year, a large home was rented which allowed SIHG to move out of the slum area. Most of the original children are still in the home. A couple have left, a couple have been adopted out, several have been provided temporary respite care. The home has been registered by the Department of Kenyan Social Services. A short term volunteer team built a temporary classroom building at the present location. Desks and chairs were provided for the classrooms by Wings of Hope, a charity arm of KLM Airlines. Tremendous progress has been made in the education of the children. A 50 foot shipping container has been converted into a first class library. Sun Micro Systems has donated a state of the art learning center. It includes a main server and 25 work stations. The children have made great advancement in their learning. All of them are learning at a faster rate than the Kenyan school system. Several have advanced to an American home school program, and are getting outstanding marks in subjects like English, geometry, and biology.

Nineteen acres of land have been purchased just outside of Nairobi. The property has been fenced, and an abundance of water flows from a well and pump that have been added. The greatest accomplishment is the spiritual, mental, and physical changes that have taken place in these children. Six years ago, they had no home, no value, and no hope. Today, they are some of the brightest and most promising kids in Nairobi.

WHAT'S IN THE FUTURE?
Only God knows what's in the future for Africa.

1. It is estimated that 40 million Africans will need emergency food aid in the coming year alone! And yet, famine, drought, and starvation in Africa have gone virtually unnoticed.
2. Ninety percent of the war casualties in Africa are civilians! More people die each month in Congo than have died in the Palestinian uprising in the past two years!
3. It is estimated that corruption has cost Africa at least $140 Billion US! The victims are normal African people. The leaders become rich and the people starve!
4. HIV/AIDS has reached pandemic proportions in Africa. So far, 17 million people in Africa have died and 25 million more may follow. 70% of adults and 80% of children in the entire world, who are living with HIV/Aids, are Africans! 95% of all AIDS orphans in the world live in Africa!

It is in this dark, despairing continent that "Mama" Becky is planting "seeds" of hope! And, she is making a difference! Children that were considered "throw aways" six years ago are being trained spiritually and academically today to become the leaders in their country tomorrow!

Only God knows what's in the future for SIHG! Their dreams are big!

Plans have been drawn up for the complete development of the nineteen acres that have been purchased. The plan is to build facilities for the total care of 150 children. The facilities would include a small chapel (now complete), homes for the children, classrooms for the school, workers quarters, short term volunteer workers quarters, a small clinic, a community center, a soccer and recreational facility, and a small farm project, that will provide food and income for the home, as well as a place for children to work and learn.
